don\u2019t have any say when it comes to how the electricity we use is generated. Energy democracy is based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondclimatepromises.ca\/fr\/community-energy-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community ownership<\/a>. This can take the form of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondclimatepromises.ca\/fr\/meet-summerside-electric\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">municipal electric utility<\/a>\u00a0or citizen- and worker-owned energy cooperatives, with lots of room for collaboration between the two. Why? Because the people who own and operate them live there, too! That means smaller wind or solar farms rather than the huge industrial wind or solar complexes favoured by big power corporations. Nebraska\u2019s power rates are also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepower.org\/public-power\/?fbclid=IwAR3mJ30hJkR95a5YwmAhwEtM_VJj0PDi7vvIIcpnD2-qcl7iOyd2UHMlhao\">lowest<\/a> of all of its neighbouring states.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-32cc8f9 ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); word-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-text-word-spacing );\">In Iowa, three electric co-operatives have joined forces to build a new local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperative.com\/remagazine\/articles\/pages\/thinking-big-were-all-there-to-help-our-town.aspx\">daycare<\/a> facility. In Virginia, a local electric co-op has managed to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electric.coop\/electric-co-op-finds-three-ways-to-deliver-broadband-to-rural-residents\">broadband internet<\/a> to the rural communities it serves. In Colorado, an electric co-op helped the disaster-prone mountain community of Red Feather Lake build a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electric.coop\/colorado-co-op-helps-disaster-prone-mountain-community-build-a-microgrid\">microgrid<\/a>, so that it\u2019s less likely to be cut off from electricity during wildfires and major snowstorms. The reason these co-ops can evolve to meet community needs is that they are built by\u2014and belong to\u2014the people and communities they serve.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22b7449 elementor-mobile-align-left elementor-align-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-raven-heading\" data-id=\"22b7449\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"raven-heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"raven-widget-wrapper\"><div class=\"raven-heading raven-heading-div\"><span class=\"raven-heading-title\">Our Power to the People Campaign in Atlantic Canada<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c6554a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c6554a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At Sierra Club Canada Foundation, we know it\u2019s possible to rapidly transition to clean renewable energies, such as wind and solar. Sure, there will be days when \u201cthe wind doesn\u2019t blow and the sun doesn\u2019t shine,\u201d but we can utilize low-cost innovations to store energy safely and reliably and reduce peak energy demand with new smart technologies.<\/p><p>Unfortunately, most big corporations\u2014whether private or public\u2014don\u2019t have much interest in low-cost, community-scale renewable energy solutions.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-32cc8f9 ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); word-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-text-word-spacing );\">The Power to the People campaign seeks to foster conversations about energy democracy in Atlantic Canada and connect people and communities that want to make it happen. These community-owned and operated utilities are doing a much better job of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and leading the transition to wind and solar power. They\u2019re also piloting energy storage solutions and supporting energy efficiency initiatives in their communities in a big way.\u00a0<\/p><p>In addition, cooperatives are part of the fabric of Atlantic Canada and have a long history of supporting workers and communities. Today, there are more than one hundred <a href=\"https:\/\/atlanticcreditunions.ca\/our-community\/atlantic-canada-co-operatives\/\">cooperatives in the region<\/a>\u2014ranging from housing co-ops and credit unions to fishing and community forest co-ops. There\u2019s even a wind farm co-op.<\/p><p>Still wondering whether energy democracy is realistic?
