In March, the Antarctic hit a record-breaking 40\u00baC above<\/a> normal temperatures; the Arctic saw 30\u00baC above normal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, this isn\u2019t an April Fools joke. It really isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps if Will Smith had slapped Chris Rock while standing at the North or South Pole there might have been a chance to get the world\u2019s attention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris Hatch, of the National Observer, writes<\/a>, \u201cScientists were left scrambling for words. \u2018Impossible,\u2019 \u2018unthinkable,\u2019 \u2018stunning,\u2019 \u2018freakish.\u2019 Cryosphere scientists who spend their lives on the planet\u2019s ice sheets and glaciers say \u2018Antarctic climatology has been rewritten.\u2019”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please take a moment to let this sink in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re someone who likes to understand the science behind stuff like this, the temperature spike at the South Pole had something to do with an atmospheric river<\/a> (the Antarctic may have also experienced record-breaking rainfall\u2014the climate scientists are still looking into it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the North Pole, I haven\u2019t done enough digging to find out. To be honest, I don\u2019t really care what the precise trigger was. We know more than enough already: we\u2019re heating the planet at an alarming rate. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (i.e., the federal department that should be all over this with meaningful solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions), the annual average temperature in Canada has increased by 1.7\u00baC since 1948, and by 2.3\u00baC in northern Canada (see Canada\u2019s Changing Climate Report<\/a>, p. 116, Government of Canada, 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So much for \u201ckeeping 1.5\u00baC alive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s gut-wrenching. But for some of us, what\u2019s even more horrifying is that it\u2019s not front-page news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will it take to displace frivolous Hollywood news and get the urgency of climate catastrophe, species extinction, and biosphere collapse on people\u2019s radar? Government leaders could certainly make<\/em> it happen, like they did with Covid-19. But they choose not to. Instead, they offer us opportunities to participate in public consultations on climate change plans from time to time, but nothing actually gets done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When my colleagues and I were coming up with a name for our new Beyond Coal Atlantic campaign website, it didn\u2019t take us long to settle on Beyondclimatepromises.ca<\/a>. Please take a moment to poke around the site, and be sure to read our page on energy democracy<\/a>, which we\u2019ll be talking more about in the weeks to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re also entering the \u201cOh, sh@#, we need to find more funding to keep our campaign going” phase\u2014a  familiar scenario for many environmental groups, especially those that stand their ground with government and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
