{"id":4191,"date":"2022-05-26T12:12:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T12:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beyondclimatepromises.ca\/?p=4191"},"modified":"2022-08-15T18:28:37","modified_gmt":"2022-08-15T18:28:37","slug":"time-to-challenge-emeras-monopoly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beyondclimatepromises.ca\/fr\/time-to-challenge-emeras-monopoly\/","title":{"rendered":"Time to Challenge Emera&#8217;s Monopoly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>For immediate release: May 26, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-time-to-challenge-emera-s-monopoly\"><strong>It\u2019s time to challenge Emera\u2019s monopoly<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Nova Scotians can\u2019t afford to pay the price for another year of record shareholder profits or<\/em> <em>more unnecessary delays in transitioning to clean renewable energy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Halifax\/Kjipuktuk \u2013 At Emera&#8217;s annual shareholders\u2019 meeting in Halifax today, CEO Scott Balfour will have lots to brag about: Emera\u2019s profits are better than ever<sup>1<\/sup> and shareholder returns averaged an impressive 11.5% over 10 years, according to the company\u2019s latest annual report.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp; Balfour got a 6% raise, too, earning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxexaminer.ca\/featured\/emera-sees-record-profits\/\">$8.28 million<\/a> in total compensation in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what\u2019s good for shareholders (and Scott Balfour) isn\u2019t necessarily good for Nova Scotia customers, or for those who rely on Emera&#8217;s companies in the US or the Caribbean to supply their electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are having to choose between heating and cooling their homes or buying groceries,\u201d says Tynette Deveaux, with Sierra Club\u2019s Beyond Coal Atlantic campaign. \u201cYet Emera\u2019s flagship company, Nova Scotia Power, is threatening to raise residential rates by 10 percent. How is that okay?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nova Scotia\u2019s Utility and Review Board will hear Nova Scotia Power\u2019s general rate application (GRA) in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Nova Scotians are on the hook for $1.8 billion to pay for the Maritime Link, which still isn\u2019t delivering the full block of hydro power from Muskrat Falls that was promised to Nova Scotia Power customers.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe could have built a lot of wind and solar farms in Nova Scotia for $1.8 billion,\u201d says Gretchen Fitzgerald, National Programs Director for Sierra Club Canada Foundation. \u201cApart from a few renewable energy pilot projects that Nova Scotia Power has undertaken recently, the corporation is basically jogging on the spot when it comes to transitioning to clean renewable energy,\u201d says Fitzgerald.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it turns out, Emera is setting the target for renewables much lower than the Nova Scotia government. In its 2021 annual report, Emera states it will \u201csupport Nova Scotia Power in meeting its target of 60 percent renewable energy by 2030.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup> Nova Scotia\u2019s Environmental Goals and Climate Change Reduction Act, however, states that 80 percent of the province\u2019s electricity must be generated by renewables by the end of this decade.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSooner or later we\u2019re going to have to face the fact that it\u2019s not in Emera\u2019s or Nova Scotia Power\u2019s self-interest to speed up the transition to renewable energy,\u201d says Deveaux. \u201cEmera shareholders stand to profit from stretching out the life of coal plants and building new natural (fossil) gas plants to replace them. Our interests simply don\u2019t align. It\u2019s time to break Nova Scotia Power\u2019s monopoly. The province should be looking to buy back and diversify the grid.
