In just a few weeks, the federal government is expected to release a draft outlining new regulations for a cap on oil and gas sector emissions. We know this isn\u2019t the sexiest topic, but it\u2019s an important one, and it could be a game changer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The oil and gas industry is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Canada\u2014and the industry\u2019s lobbyists are doing everything they can to keep it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OK, but do we really need a \u201ccap\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada has set national goals and targets<\/a> for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including for the oil and gas sector. But these targets aren\u2019t working.<\/p>\n\n\n

Without stronger regulations, including accountability and tougher penalties, the oil and gas industry simply isn\u2019t going to forego its massive profits\u2014even for the health and well-being of humanity. In fact, oil and gas sector emissions have risen more than emissions in any other sector of the economy:<\/strong> 88% since 1990<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cap\u2014particularly a \u201chard\u201d cap<\/a>\u2014on emissions would send a loud message to oil and gas companies that its business-as-usual days are numbered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would also signal to the provinces that they have to get serious about transitioning to clean, renewable energies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, but what about jobs?<\/strong><\/em> Yes, what about jobs?<\/em> Did you know that the fossil fuel sector (oil, gas, and coal) accounts for less than 1 percent of all jobs<\/a> in Canada? The fossil fuel industry has done an impressive job inflating its role as an employer. It\u2019s also snuffed out a lot of union jobs. Canada\u2019s mining sector, which includes oil and gas, \u201chas experienced the most rapid decline in union representation<\/a> of any sector in the Canadian economy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about inflation?<\/strong><\/em> The fossil fuel industry wants us to believe that the rising cost of oil and gas is simply a function of the market. But the truth is, the biggest chunk of those inflated prices is going directly into corporate profits<\/a>. Last year, the oil and gas industry saw its biggest profits<\/a> ever recorded, while consumers struggled to keep up with rising costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
