If we continue to burn fossil fuels, we will not be able to stop runaway climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t take our word for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the International Energy Agency released its groundbreaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/net-zero-by-2050\">Roadmap to Net Zero<\/a>, warning that countries must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/may\/18\/no-new-investment-in-fossil-fuels-demands-top-energy-economist\">immediately stop<\/a> all new fossil fuel exploration and development if we are to have a shot at containing the rising global temperature to within liveable limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve heard lots of promises from our federal and provincial governments about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to clean renewable energy, but words don\u2019t count without real action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-plain is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" id=\"h-the-number-of-countries-that-have-pledged-to-reach-net-zero-emissions-by-mid-century-or-soon-after-continues-to-grow-but-so-do-global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-this-gap-between-rhetoric-and-action-needs-to-close-if-we-are-to-have-a-fighting-chance-of-reaching-net-zero-by-2050-and-limiting-the-rise-in-global-temperatures-to-1-5-c-net-zero-by-2050-a-roadmap-for-the-global-energy-sector\"><p>\u201cThe number of countries that have pledged to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century or soon after continues to grow, but so do global greenhouse gas emissions. This gap between rhetoric and action needs to close if we are to have a fighting chance of reaching net zero by 2050 and limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 \u00b0C.\u201d<\/p><cite>\u2014Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director, International Energy Agency, <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/deebef5d-0c34-4539-9d0c-10b13d840027\/NetZeroby2050-ARoadmapfortheGlobalEnergySector_CORR.pdf\">Net Zero by 2050<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the Prime Minister of Canada stood on the world stage at COP26 and committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/speeches\/2021\/11\/01\/prime-ministers-remarks-delivering-canadas-national-statement-cop26-summit\">capping Canada\u2019s emissions<\/a> from the oil and gas sector at current levels and achieving net-zero by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why is the Federal Cabinet now considering giving the green light for the massive Bay du Nord oil and gas project off the coast of Newfoundland? The multibillion-dollar project, by Equinor and Husky Energy, goes directly against Canada\u2019s commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to clean renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bay du Nord at a glance<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The project calls for 50 offshore wells and a floating oil production station 500 kilometers east of St John\u2019s, NL.<\/li><li>It would be Canada\u2019s first deepwater drilling site, with drilling depths of up to 1,200 metres\u2014far deeper than current offshore drilling, which is at a depth of 100 metres or less.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-plain is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe probability of a serious accident, fatality, injury, explosion, or fire being reported grows by 8.5 percent with every additional 100 feet of depth at which an offshore platform operates.\u201d<\/p><cite>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/4\/20\/21228577\/offshore-drilling-deepwater-horizon-10-year-anniversary\">Offshore drilling has dug itself a deeper hole since Deepwater Horizon &#8211; The Verge<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It\u2019s estimated that more than a billion barrels of oil could be extracted over the project\u2019s 30-year lifespan.\u00a0<\/li><li>The drilling operation would commence in 2028, and therefore extend beyond 2050\u2014Canada\u2019s deadline for achieving net-zero emissions.<\/li><li>Oil from Bay du Nord would add millions of tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub> to our atmosphere each year. Although Equinor is touting that its actual drilling operation would produce less CO<sub>2 <\/sub>\u00a0than other offshore oil and gas projects, their estimates don\u2019t include the fact that these fossil fuels will be <em>used<\/em>, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghginsight.com\/what-are-scope-3-emissions\/\">downstream emissions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li><li>Seismic blasting, leaks, and spills pose an enormous environmental risk to marine life and the already-warming ocean.\u00a0<\/li><li>The Innu of Ekuanitshit <a href=\"https:\/\/thenarwhal.ca\/newfoundland-oil-gas-federal-oversight\/\">oppose the project<\/a>, because it threatens the health and safety of their community, as well as their traditional way of life.\u00a0<\/li><li>In 2018, Husky Energy had a massive oil spill off the coast of Newfoundland, creating an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/oil-spill-newfoundland-husky-charges-1.6216670\">oil slick<\/a> 21 kilometres long and eight kilometres wide. It was the province\u2019s worst offshore oil spill\u2014so far.<\/li><li>In January 2022, the Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat released a <a href=\"https:\/\/waves-vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca\/Library\/41034946.pdf\">report<\/a>, which found that Equinor\u2019s Environmental Impact Statement was biased, had inappropriate conclusions, and was therefore unreliable to inform decision making.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-promoting-nova-scotia-s-offshore-oil-and-gas\"><strong>Promoting Nova Scotia\u2019s Offshore Oil and Gas<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Nova Scotia\u2019s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, the province has an <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.novascotia.ca\/oil-and-gas\/offshore\">offshore potential<\/a> of 120 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 8 billion barrels of oil. The department eagerly promotes opportunities for offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province has attracted two of the world\u2019s largest oil and gas companies\u2014Shell Canada and BP Exploration Ltd\u2014as well as StatOil Canada Limited. These corporations have committed to spending billions for oil and gas exploration off the coast of Nova Scotia over the next several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite opposition from the Mi\u2019kmaq and the general public, the province continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/nova-scotia-offshore-oil-gas-exploration-no-bids-2021-1.6246747\">court<\/a> the oil and gas industry. In 2021, Mi\u2019kmaw grandmothers, community members, and their allies successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxexaminer.ca\/featured\/the-goldboro-lng-plant-scheme-has-collapsed\/\">defeated<\/a> Pieridae Energy\u2019s proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, destined for Goldboro, Nova Scotia. However, Calgary-based Pieridae Energy is now trying to pitch an <em>offshore<\/em> natural gas platform off Goldboro, capitalizing on Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, which has caused rising oil and gas prices and concerns about energy security. As some have wisely pointed out, the cost of wind and solar hasn\u2019t gone up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Costly Decision to Delay<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, economists have been warning that delaying the transition away from fossil fuels will cost governments billions more and leave communities behind. Canada now experiences unprecedented flooding, heat waves, and wildfires\u2014conditions that have long devastated the Global South., It\u2019s clear that we must prioritize a just transition away from fossil fuels\u2014not the expansion of the oil and gas industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You can\u2019t have it both ways<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcoming multinationals to Atlantic Canada to extract oil and gas off our shores is <em>not<\/em> a strategy for capping oil and gas sector emissions or setting Canada on a path to achieve net zero. It\u2019s deceitful, and it needs to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We\u2019re either on board with rapidly transitioning to clean renewable energy or we\u2019re faking it.
