I’d like to introduce you to a young girl named Norah, but first let me tell you why.
A few months ago, while working on the Atlantic Chapter’s Beyond Coal campaign, I stumbled upon a stark but illuminating bit of information from Nova Scotia Power. One of its renewable energy modeling scenarios showed that the utility could not only shut down coal power plants in the province by 2030, but also do so for essentially the same cost to ratepayers as getting off coal by 2040. The only real difference was that the inevitable rate increase would be incurred sooner rather than later.
Although Nova Scotia Power is under pressure to phase out coal by 2030, it continues to remind groups like ours that Nova Scotia received an extension from the federal government to continue operating coal power plants until 2040. So no promises.
What does it really mean to postpone the actions that are needed now—whether by a year or a decade?
Norah, a young neighbour of mine, has some thoughts about that.
Norah knows that what’s happening isn’t right and isn’t fair—and she’s doing what she can to address it. She started the Earth Club at her school and recently adopted a vegan diet after learning about the impact of food production on the environment.
If you’re thinking, Well, that’s not going to be enough to solve the climate and biodiversity crises—you’re right, it isn’t. But when you zoom out, you’ll see that the world is full of Norahs, doing what they can to make things better. That’s power.
